Man, I remember that pose, from my own family (smokers all, back in the day). Just that moment of poise and quiet action, as the cigarette burned down, and they waxed poetic on the trivialities of the day. Innately human, filled with potential, and built-in loss.

Ah, but it's not reality that speaks here -- not yours, anyway. It's mine, and any other viewer's. I see a reflection of myself in your art, and, after all, that is one of the goals, no?

Hehe, exactly.
I was talking to a friend a while ago, and I was telling her to crop the photo in some way because it was distracting the viewer's attention from the subject. She replied that the bit to be cropped off meant something to her, and I made exactly that same argument, that the viewer relates to the photo through his own experience and from his standpoint.
